The 'magic sound colorization' of older mpc models

Hi!

Funny thing which made me wonder about the issue - one of my friends got an idea to put his DAW wav samples through my mpc 3000 to give it THAT SOUND. Sh*t is silly as hell, I know, but my question is:

WHEN the colorization/modifiation of sound actualy happens in the box? When the signal gets into the sampler or when it gets out of it or both ways? I only know it's a matter of A/D D/A converters.

I'm talking generaly about the older models which are known to have old and worse quality converters like 60, 3000, 2000 classic maybe, but also gear like sp1200 or ensoniq eps for example

yes both ways... sampling in, recording the outputs... often when you have all the samples playing at once through the main outs people say it sort of compresses the sound ever so slightly... also, pitching up samples and pitching them back down once you sample into the mpc reduces the sample rate which adds character.

is it worth doing that? absolutely not... it can be cool but not for an entire sample library. Half of what makes the sound is the way you must manipulate samples in the mpc just to make a beat happen.

The magic sound is just dated circuitry. Perhaps engineered better than todays builds. But the grimey vintage sound can be achieved on any daw and sampler, peeps still got it backwards.
