If it's a midi interface.
the mpc connected to midi means that your computer can communicate with the mpc or vice versa. Say you got some cool virtual instuments in cubase on your computer, and want the beat of the mpc to sync to cubase, hook the midi out of the computer (m-audio) to the midi in of the mpc. this means that the computers out can communicate with the mpc. To sync it you need to set up cubase (preferences) to send midi time code or midi clock to the mpc. and in the mpc, you need to set the sync to external.
the other way round, if you want your mpc to control the notes of the virtual synth, you hook the out of the mpc to the in of the m-audio. this means that the mpc can send data to the computer, for example, playing virtual instuments with the pads of the mpx. it's like a controller keyboard.
if it's an audio interface, it means you can record the audio into your computer like a multitrack. the signal you record will show as a wav file.
