How to QA a used 2500 within 14 days

Hey MPC Forum fam!

I just got a used 2500 from a pawn shop that looks to be in pretty good shape physically. I'm a first time mpc owner and know absolutely nothing about the workflow or how to test it's operational condition. I've used other hardware and DAWs to produce music, just never touched an mpc.

My 2500 has has a blue skin applied so I can't determine the condition of the original casing. The pads have been upgraded to fat pads and it came with 128 mb of ram and JJOS 3.10 installed. There is a DVD-RW that appears to be a little loose, as well. The screen has no scratches and was upgraded to a blue LCD. The box has thst kinda sweet odor of one of those club smoke machine. Not sure what to make of that. None of the Q sliders or buttons are sticky.

I only have 14 days to return it for a full refund so what advice do you have for me that'll show what I can do to test it's functionality?

Quite simply, get to work with it and make some music; you'll soon discover any problems. Watch out for insensitive/non-functioning pads, buttons that need really hard presses to register, crackly/malfunctioning audio outs, faulty card reader etc. There's not much going on in an MPC2500 that you won't use within the first day or so of practical usage.

However remember that ultimately it's an old piece of hardware, so it wouldn't be unusual to find that some of the switches under the buttons are starting to fail.

Thanks!!! I don't even have a memory card yet, but plan to try the dvd drive to load sounds.

Make sure all of the outputs work without static/crackles. Try wiggling the cables around a little and see if that makes any sounds.

On the whole, the switches are really the only thing that are likely to go. Some might be harder to push down than others, that'll be your first clue. Spraying them with Deoxit brings em back to like-new, unless they're REALLY worn out (then you'll need to replace them)

You likely have a good piece of equipment though, the only known issue with some 2500 is some crackling on the main output. This is an intermittent issue that can't really be replicated--mine popped up like 2-3 months after I bought mine. It's probably due to a faulty PCB board. Not a deal breaker but certainly an annoyance.

It's a fun machine and JJOS makes it a true joy to use. Hope you enjoy it!

Thanks for the suggestions. Haven't yet tested the outputs, but will make that a priority tomorrow.

I'm closing out my 4th day with the 2500 and I only received my 8 GB SanDisk Ultra (up to 50ps) CF card from Amazon this.afternoon. I jumped right into loading a track from the DVD drive and found a sample chopping tutorial on youtube. Easy enough for me coming from the MC909. At this point using headphones, i experiemced no obvious problems with buttons or pads malfunctioning .

It's too soon to tell, but I ran into a freezing issue when attempting to save all programs to my CF card. I did format the card first, so it's not as simple a fix as that. Data will start to save, then it will freeze on 24% and "cancel" had no impact. I ejected the card and received a write error, so I tried again and this time it froze at 60%. I started searching this forum for a solution but I can't pin it down yet. May be the card.

I left the MPC on and will check on it in the morning.
