when you open step edit and there's nothing there. its because there is no note on the track you are in (if you are on track 2 and hit step you will be stepping in track 2) at the point in time you are at (top right - bars-beats-ticks).
when you are in step edit use your transport controls to navigate. you can step forward and back in increments (the < STEP > buttons) that depend on what your quantize is set to. if you have quantize off you need to hit step forward 96 times to get to the next beat. you can also use the controls to step from event to event (hold down GO TO and one of the STEP buttons).
so once you know how to navigate you can enter data at any point using the drum pads (and you can also tweak alot of the event properties - like decay and velocity). also you can cut paste copy and delete events.
Also, if you hit OPEN WINDOW while in step mode you can turn "Auto Step Increment" on. that comes in handy sometimes. what that does is when you enter a note with the drum pad it automatically goes to the next step (remember where that is depends on the quantize setting). really nice for like, a drum and bass track, where there is a note happening at every interval. like:
Kick, Hat, Snare, K, H, S, K, H ..... on the 8th notes. that way if you know the pattern you just need to find the right tempo....
i dunno, step comes in mad handy. i hope this gets you all hype on it....
