Purpose of sound modules...?

I was looking through the new Scratch Mag and noticed that Kanye and Jazze Pha uses one (E-MU Proteus 2000), and Trackboyz (Proteus 2500). I was curious what exactly is the purpose of a sound module.

To give you more sounds. Do a google search for either machine and you will come up with the specs on it.

think of a sound module as a keyboard "without keys". it's nothing more than sounds waiting to be triggered by something...keyboard, PC, MPC, etc.
