Using MPC Studio w. Pro Tools Q's

Hi everyone. So I've worked out setting up sync in MMC and how to map MPC pads to multiple outputs, this all seems simple enough. How come I can't record patterns as I would do if using the MPC software as a standalone application? For example if I load up a drum kit all of the pads play sounds and I can use the play button on the MPC itself, but I can't hold REC and press PLAY to record midi information into the MPC software. Surely this should be simple enough?

Thanks all for any help with this. I'd imagine the issue I'm having isn't specific to Pro Tools as a DAW.
