How did they do it?

The song is "Prime Audio Soup" by Meat Beat Manifesto. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xI8mCKLiRM

The big, booming bass or kick sound starts @ 0:23.

I've gotten close layering kick drums, pitching them all down, tweaking the envelopes and adding a little reverb to fill the sound out a little. And even just mimicking the sound myself into a mic, tweaking that, then playing back the sample using "16 levels,"but I'm still not there.

Any ideas would be appreciated. I'm sure it's something simple I'm missing.

Also try using ducking/side-chaining to bring down the rest of the audio in your mix when the bass drum hits, it can add a lot of impact. In this video he's set the attack/release to make it more of a womp-womp effect, but if you speed up the timing on the attack/release you get an imperceptible ducking that lets the kick drum punch through the mix.

Ever since I learned this technique, I use it on everything, LOL.
