what is layering exactly????

what is layering, whats the point of layering? can anyone explain exactly??

layering is exactly what it sounds like. superimposing different sounds to achieve texture and different sound. for example, you can layer drums to make it bang harder. you can filter out a drum sound and layer it with the original so you get more lower end freq. or you can take a kick drum sound with sharp attack and layer over a boomy kick to make it deep. possibilities are endless. just experiment with what sounds good to you. its 4 30 in the morning, i need to goto sleep

thank u man, for answering my question im very new to the beat making process (as u can tell) but little by little i am trying to educate my self, as of right now i have no hardware to work with, the only thing i have is reason 2.5 which i use redrum for my drum machine... but what i would really wish for one day is to be able to get my hands on a mpc 1000 or 2000xl, im trying to save money but it may take me a little while,due to the price!! to be honest with you i have personally never seen a mpc drum machine ( 1000 or 2000xl or even 4000) up close the closest i have gotten is by looking at pictures on the internet,and thats the closest ive ever been to a mpc drum machine, untill then im just going to have to keep asking very basic questions about the beat macking process as a whole ( like layering)but your answer definitly gave me an idea on how layering works
