I'm assuming that you are talking about the MPC 4000? If so
A Multi is the place where you can have 128 Parts setup. Each Part corresponds
to a Program. So essentially you can have 128 programs at your use.
Each Multi is where you store the FX settings, and the various settings for each
program, such as what Midi Channel it responds to, what Output it goes to and
various other things. The Multi must have at least 1 program assigned to a part,
or you will not hear anything.
So when you start up your MPC 4000.
Load in your Sample Program.
Go to the Multi Page and create a blank Multi and then
go and assign that program to the part. Then when you are in the "Main" screen
you can then in the Track Block assign what part that Track will use.
