With the MPC1000 this should now be possible since you can record internally now.

you mean so a singer, guitarist or emcee can perform overtop the preexisting tracks on your mpc when you don't have a computer?
here's my question - is the quality as good as recording into a delta 66 or comparable breakout box if you're using the same condenser mic/preamp?

the quality is good.
sometimes i'll make a basic beat, go to the record screen, hit play (so the beat is playing) and then hit record and lay down some stuff. guitar, bass, whatever. as long as you play in time you can chop each live recorded sample and drop it throughout your beat easily.
nice, quick way to add more layers to your beat.
