Question about sampling

I don't have a MPC, but I plan on getting one. Until then i've been reading about sampling and such just to get an idea of what to do. My question is if I had an MP3 and I wanted to take a sound off it, would I be able to?

1. Record from your souncard's outputs to your mpc's record ins... just like any other audio source.
2. Chop the sound out of the mp3 and then convert the file to .wav and transfer it to your mpc whichever way you can (zip, cd, cf card reader)

They're the only two i can think of.

How do I chop it? Sorry, i'm basic when it comes to this stuff

Um, another question, after I get the sample, is there a way to speed it up on the mpc or would i have to do that on my computer with some program?

Chopping up a mp3 (or even a wav) on a computer is something I don't know about. But it can be done quite easily with basic programs.

Yes, once a sample is in the mpc it's very easy to adjust the tune (speed).

WDJ is right...there are numerous programs that are easy to use for desk top chopping....

The Scenario u described is one that i meet & perform on a daily basis....sometimes for hours on end.

ok...scenario....u have an mp3 file that has a killer kick & snare u want to lift!

Open up a program like Recycle, sound forge or one of my personal favourites....Wavepad (Its free....love it...)

Once open, import the mp3 file, then chop out the sections you want....different programs have different names for the 'chopping out' process....Trimming, truncating, extraction....but u get the idea.

You can then save these individual chops/samples in the same mp3 format...but for the purpose of importation & use in the mpc 1000, I always save the files as '16 Bit WAVS sampled at 44.1KHz(44,100 cycles per second) either Stereo or mono....your choice!

Once saved....transfer the samples on to your CF card via a card reader, then place the CF card in the MPC & away u go!!!!

I find it better (For me) to do my editing this way rather than sampling direct because whilst i'm on the pc i can use a program like 'Blue Box' (Shout outs to Waxaegis...the creator of it) to actually place the samples into ready made programs that the mpc will read!!!!
