You generally have to know the key if you have samples that you want to play, but also remember that music has no rules, there are times when people make the music off key to add tension and make you pay attention to the song. But for what you want to do you need the key. The best way to learn it to practice, but what I did when I was stuggling was to play around until something sounded right. I was usually always real close, but I usuall would have to take a break from the beat, then when I came back, my ears usually told me then if I was on or off, but witht he MP, you can transpose to get it to fit.

and if you're using vst instruments, in some cases...depending on what the vst is...it may not be able to provide the sound you're looking for....

but there's really no rule of thumb as long as it's not off tune by a long margin...but experimenting out tones is essential during those times...even if it takes weeks to get it right

yeh u can, but you'll get better control over your recording if u have a mixer.
