Reason as a slave to MPC2000XL?

I have both Reason 3.0 and an MPC2000xl. I would like to use the MPC as the main sequencer, but use some sounds on reason; basically use reason as a slave. I have a midi keyboard, so I can play melodies on Reason which is something i cant really do on the mpc. I know this has to be possible, although maybe not easily explained over the net or in words. However I still wanted to ask the community. Has anybody done this, or some variation thereof?

I use my keyboard to trigger sounds from cubase and sequence it all in the MPC....not sure if that's like what your trying to do...I have the MIDI out of keyboard going to the MIDI in of MPC...since my comp doesnt have MIDI, I have a MIDI to usb converter going from the MIDI out of the MPC to the usb on the computer. This is how you can get them working together however you need to make sure it's all set up properly with all things on the same channel and you will only be able to hear everything together if you have a mixer....or you can keep it real gangsta and have one hooked up to your monitors and have one hooked up to headphones and hear everything. Hope this helps cause I wrote more than my share.

Hmm that does help a lot actually- its exactly what i want to do, right now i have the midi keyboard running straight to the computer (since it has a usb port). The MPC is hooked to the computer via midi-to-usb converter, and the problem has been with that connection since day one- i still dont have any evidence that the mpc was ever communicating with Reason, which obviously shows im doing something wrong. But im gonna try your setup, although i dont have a mixer... does anyone have any recommendations- i have a very modest setup, so bear that in mind, nothing too fancy just what i need to get the job done, thanks all

one more question for anyone who can relate...does anyone use the m-audio midisport uno as their connection to reason? its a usb to midi converter, im beginning not to trust this thing

If you want to sequence reason (VST) or whatever you do on the keyboard with the MPC you need to have the keyboard hooked to the MPC through MIDI...after that's hooked up, then go from MPC to computer. The MIDI sport is pretty good in my opinion.

Thanks for clearing that up, but actually shortly after posting that last one i an across penfolds post (thanks for showing me anyway) on my own- my problem was that the device wasnt truly recognized by windows, and i had to go to my devices in "settings" to install it right- after that it started working! thats great because it shows i have a connection now- so after following the short tutorial by penfold, i found out how to use the mpc as a controller, just like my keyboard. Now all i need to do is figure out how to play a sound with the keyboard for instance, and hear it thru the MPC as i am sequencing (I have some studio headphones connected to it)... My main goal was always to use the keyboard to play sounds FROM Reason to record in real time on the MPC as i sequence it. Im glad i can use the MPC as a controller too, but actually i prefer the keyboard when i want to do that, i love Reason but im really trying to do things on the 2000XL, any ideas?

Im not terribly interested in using the mpc as a controller, I have the same dillema as the fellow who posted in the link i put up.

To do this just hook MIDI out of keyboard to MIDI in on MPC then MIDI out of MPC to wherever reason is (Most likely computer) For that I use the MIDI to usb converter. Once you do that you can sequence reason in the MPC with the keyboard as your controller...after you sequence what you want...just track it all out in reason and you can mess with what you want there. I'm cutting you both slack cause if you read all my above posts I am writing the same thing twice.

Just to reiterate,,,

The setup you have not works fine. now all u have to do is..

Plug KEYBOARD into MIDI IN OF MPC and the signal will carry thru the MPC triggering the sounds on reason or what ever program you wish. also the mpc ot reason can record that midi signal. so u can play it back..

Thanks, i understand that concept fully i know its simple- I have the exact setup both of you described, thats not the problem at all, really- i have the keyboard midi out to the midi in on the mpc, then midi out of mpc to the PC (with reason), via M-Audio midisport usb adapter- this allows me to use both of them as controllers, the only thing now is that when i play notes on the keyboard i cant hear them on the headphones i have hooked to the mpc, so it still seems like the mpc is the slave... I know its not the end of the world, im sure there is something simple im missing so ima keep playing with it- thanks penfold, i know you said the mpc can record it, i just cant hear it from the mpc thats all- niceweis, you explained the same thing twice but you did not have to, if you notice i said that i got it working... thanks anyway-

Your not going to hear it from the MPC cause that's not where the sound is coming from, you'll hear it from reason...but it will sequence with the MPC....hook your headphones up to reason, and try a lil sequence with the keyboard, reason, and MPC, you'll hear it through reason, but it will play with the MPC and sequence there. To get everything together you'll need to track it out to reason. (If I were you I would het a mixer so you can hear everything together) I had this same problem about 2-3 weeks ago, no sweat, just get a mixer.

like Nice said, the mpc is only sending data so you wont be hearing anything out of the mpc.

thats like turning on the TV but sitting and watching the remote control.
