-Just got my Roland JV-2080, it has MIDI "IN", "OUT" and "THRU"

-I have an M AUDIO Keyboard controller with only one MIDI "OUT" port.

-I've got 2 MIDI cables hooked up, and at the moment I can only either play the JV 2080 with my keyboard by itself{without sequencing}, or use the MPC pads to play the synth {so i can sequence}, no keyboard.

-I want the keyboard to control the JV-2080, and my MPC to sequence the 2080's sounds which I am playing on my keyboard.

How do I do this!!!?? Do I just need another MIDI cable to hook my keyboard up to my MPC to control it?

MIDI 1 out from MPC to MIDI in on JV-2080
MIDI 2 out from MPC to MIDI in on Keyboard
MIDI out from Keyboard to MIDI B in on MPC

With this set-up, I think you should be able to set the MPC to play the sounds on the 2080, but control it with the keyboard. Set the proper MIDI channel on your MPC's main screen (instead of DRUMS 1,2,3, or 4 set it to MIDI (1-16 for port 1/A, 17-32 for port 2/B).

So when you press record on your MPC and play on the keyboard, your MPC will still record the MIDI data, like you pressed the pads on the MPC, but you will be able to play on the keyboard instead. You can also now play the samples that you have in your MPC on the keyboard as well, just set the DRUMS back on instead of MIDI on that particular track

AND...........

Put the 2080 in perform mode. That way you have 16 channels (sounds) to use. MIDI channel 10 is ALWAYS drums on the 2080.

Lastly---To set up your MPC pads like a piano

go into the param screen. and into the auto chrom settings. set it up to make a new program. but dont assign a sound from the mpc's memory just leave it blank.. change to drum2 or what ever and set the midi up. bang bang.. all done

no I've got some vaseline you can use.

Seriously---all you need is one out on the keyboard.(all midi k.b.'s have 1)

On the MPC when you change sounds/racks you go from A to B and vice versa. Whatever MIDI channel you are on that 's what you are able to play on the keyboard.

For ex--if the 2080 is in A and the MPC is on track 1
Midi 14A (then whatever patch is on channel 14 of the 2080 will be on the keys)

If you have a motif in midi B---and you turn to track 2 with midi on 11B---whatever patch is on 11B will be on the keys.

Sussed it

For anyone with the same problem, you need THREE midi cables.

1.Midi OUT from keyboard, to midi IN on MPC

2.Midi OUT from synth to midi IN on MPC

3.Midi IN from synth to midi OUT on MPC

It will sequence and play. Now I just gotta figure out how to have two or three patches playing at once....

Do you need the MIDI coming out of the synth into the MPC? I know I got it backwards in my post before  then I realized that the MPC didn't need to send MIDI to the keyboard, just the synth. But why would the synth need to send MIDI back to the MPC?

IF your using a synth as a controller AND a soundsource(like a motif or fantom keyboard) u need to have the midi going back to the keyboard from the MPC so u can control sounds.

This isent necassry if ur just using a MIDI controller casue the MIDI controller dont have any sounds on it

Thats what I thought. I'm saying, hes got a control keyboard, a MPC, and a synth he wants to control with the keyboard.

MIDI out from Control keyboard to MIDI in on MPC
MIDI out from MPC to MIDI in on synth module/keyboard

Shouldn't this work? Unless he's actually triggering sounds on the synth (which I thought he wasn't, hence the controller keyboard) the MPC will record/respond to the controller's triggering, and then in turn, trigger the synth.

"MIDI out from Control keyboard to MIDI in on MPC
MIDI out from MPC to MIDI in on synth module/keyboard"

Thats what i thought, and why i only bought 2 MIDI cables.

The MPC needs to record the notes, then recieve them again from the synth during play back, it cant recieve those sounds from the controller because as Classic sais, it is exactly that, a controller, not a sound module.

That would work if the keyboard was a sound module i suppose...

Anyways i'm cookin up some keyboard fatness right now...

thanks !

Your discribed setup scenario would work only on 16 channels. Doing it this way, you'd have to dedicate channels 1-8 to one device, & channels 9-16 to the other. Or you could stack or share channels just as well. But with the addition of a small midi hub/patchbay you're able to go something like this, keyboard midi out>midi patchbays' midi-input (& depending on the # of outs it has)>to all the devices in your setup. And in your DAW s/w or midi utility s/w, you'll see each device setup with it's own set of 16 midi channels coming from whatever midi-port it was assigned to. Which one would you prefer?
