lookin 4 tips+HONEST input on gettin better on mpc pads..tap

ready 4 round 2, lets try this again... i think it got UGLY last time cuz i asked the wrong question...

I read the mpc 1k manaul fully now, learned a lot or so i'm hoping

but what i'm lookin for is info and tips on getting better on tappin out those drum beats on the mpc 1000

from the manual i'm getting this.. on my mpc 1k i do this..

i set my tempo to like 85 and my bars i don't know i tried 8 bars then 4, then 2... to no avail my friends..

i need more tips and info on how to practice tappin em out on these pads yo..i can do it fine in my head or u know on a table..

I got the XL, so it may be different, but peep:

Set the tempo to 90. Set the quantize to 1/4. Press record. Listen to the metronome, and press those pads just like you'd pound the table, just in beat to the metronome. "Kick, kick, snare, kick kick, snare, kick"

jus practice....U'l get use it...Pads will wear in after a while and u'l find the 'sweetspot'

Its helps to settle down and relax tho...Dont act all stiff

best way to practice is to turn the quantise off.

you may not get nice results at first but as you practice you will at least be able to hear your improvement and hear what needs improving on the most.

leave the click on, quantise off. try and get some hit hats sounded good over the click. then turn the click off and add some kicks and snares from there.

hmm are you using the drum sounds that came preloaded in the 1000 ? or did you sample your own shit. if your using the sounds that came loaded on the 1000 then their something wrong with your head to hand tiiming. but a good thing to do is to first tap out the snare on the 2nd notes. and then from there do your kicks. and then hi hats. you can do these in whatver order. but i find it kinda hard to do the kicks first. so tap out the snare or hi hats first.

i made a respectable beat last night,,,thing is i'm scared cuz i know i probably can't replicate it again...it was dope too.. once u have it can you save it so i could have come back to it today? cuz i turned off the mpc 1k and its gone now...

also i had tempo at 87 and i set bars at 2 bars, and this was all on track #1, how do i loop it? i mean cuz if i changed bars to 8, after 2 bars the drum track is gone right? i.e. it wont' be heard as its only in the 1st 2 bars? is that right?

might be movin to fast but so lets say i had the drums down so i now go to track #2 and thats were i add my sample right? like a piano or flute sequence right? and so on and so on..

on the zoom st-224 when u wanted something looped u jus held that pad + loop pad and it would play ENDLESSly.. how do you do it on the mpc 1k, i got this flute sample n i want it to play thru out the entire track... per the manual i got loop on,,but to no avail...

also besides the manual which i have read up +down on the metro/quant thing. where can i go to be educated on it, i.e. find out bout this whole 1/16 and 1/16(3') 1/4 and all that jazz...

its bad a$$ i'm finally learnin something here.. gon hit it up today again for 2 hours..

how exactly am I to use that click to help me out on the drums... ?

i dont know how much more clear to make it.

i said to tap the snare on the 2nd clicks. it clicks 8 times within the 2 bars. so on the 2nd 4th 6th and 8th click you tap the snare.

i think your using the wrong machine. i think you should stick with grid editing on fruity loops. or ableton and then use your mpc. fruity had a click system. so if you can study how the notes go into the places on the grid then you'll be able to better understand they help you with your timing issues.

the bottom number is beats in a measure...ex 1/4 time goes 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, etc 2/4 time goes 1,2, 1, 2, 1, 2, etc 3/4 time is a waltz 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, etc. 6/8 time is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,

each number in 1/4 time is a quarter note, to switch to 1/8 time you'd have to add eighth notes and count 1, &, 2, &, 3, &, 4, &, etc (one measure)

1/16th time is even more beats per measure, 4 beats between each quarter note. counted 1, E, &, A, 2, E, &, A, 3, E, &, A, 4, E, &, A, etc (one measure)

thing is doing the d*m thang on fruity loops is mad easy... i mean its like set up in fours n u jus click em to turn what YOU want on, ON.... but i can't seem to get it like that on this dam mpc.... i know its me... aight gon hit that ish up again tonight see what i can do....

Man, you've got the game backwards. You mean you've invested all this money into equipment and you can't tell me what a 1/16 note is? It must be nice.

Anyways I'm gonna help you to start maximizing on your investment(and give you some respectability), but you gotta be willing to give up some things(like free time).


Go to a store where they sell musical theory and composition books. Purchase a decent book(make sure they expand on every note types and values). Now get a friend(you won't be able to just read and comprehend it by yourself)who knows music theory to go over it with you(and teach you. They'll be able to give you any hands on help you need.).

Since you don't know how to play any instruments, learning the majority of the info will be difficult(because you don't play any instrument that you could incorporate the theory into). The theory is the hard part. Once you learn theory, you can apply it to any instrument and you'll have the foundation for making music. The basics include: Notation Types and Values, Time Signatures, Key Signatures and Dynamics.

When you learn time signatures, you'll have a better understanding of the movement of music(drums especially). Southern drum patterns are perfect tools for practicing speed and dexterity on pads. Play a song and try to follow along with the patterns. Over time, you should be able to duplicate then same pattern. Just do this with multiple songs and patterns to increase speed and accuracy. Then you should be able to do rolls like the greats do(theory comes first though).

turn your tv on and turn to bet, mtv or mtv2, turn your mpc on just setup a bass drum sound and snare drum sound and just play to the different videos everyday. just try to follow the beat to videos.
