A 2K classic ( NON XL model ) external SCSI port is an extension of the internal SCSI bus.
A internal ZIP drive will need to use this internal SCSI bus in the same way an external ZIP drive needs to use the external SCSI port.
If the SCSI port is toast then an internal ZIP drive is not going to be of any use to you.
Get the SCSI port ( possibly SCSI fuse ) repaired at a service centre before proceeding any further.
