Is a mixer necessary?

I have a digi 002 and had a behringer mixer hooked up to it. My boy was like you don't need that--sell it and I"ll give you Waves Platinum. So a year ago I did and proceeded to use the plugins on my beats. Okay they're cool and all BUT it just isn't like BAM--hit the low's hit the hi's hit the mid's --instead of going through all these windows and crap.

Does anyone else use a digi without a mixer or with? I'm about to get a little mixer from the pawn shop for the low and use it for my drums, cuz I miss being able to do things VERY QUICKLY.

Some people like the hands on knobs, sliders and wheels thing. It doesn't matter to me, I have limited space so I chose the digi 001 to pc and I use the mixer in vegas.

I don't mind being slowed down cause it only helps in the long run when your trying to be precise, for me that is.

Ditto. I have had periods without a mixer, everything going into a patchbay and then patched into a 8 audio card as required. Back to using a mixer again but who knows in the future.

I have read interviews engineers/producers over the years who say they only have big desks in the studio as clients expect to see one.

But it really is up to how you chose to work..

I have a mixer but never use it. It's quicker than using a mouse, but I take my time when i'm mixing stuff anyway.
The Waves eq will sound lots better than a Behringer eq anyway.

You could also check out Waves Q-clone plugin. It lets you use the buttons of your hardware eq, and copies it in software. I played with it for a while, but it's too expensive for me.
