which computer system is better for running protools, or does it not matter at all.

From what I've heard from people who hire out protools rigs, mac is better, more stable. They didnt trust PCs (windows at all).

Dont know anything much about it myself. This is just what I heard the guy saying during an installation at a studio I used to work in. The guy who owned the studio was a cheap-ass-penny-picking-scumbag, we'd hire in pro tools when required. Otherwise, we had to on work on Spectual! (some dated early 90s ish).

I'm sure there are plenty of people in here who run protools on a PC who will tell you otherwise and they might even know what their talking about.

I dont use protools, but I use a PC deskop & laptop to run all my music software.

i know its kinda funny and all, but calling a program lots of people use a name doesnt explain whats potentially bad about the program... i know i didnt learn anything from your statement, except that you dont like pro-tools, and frankly thats the part i dont give a $hit about

Pro Tools is the industry standard for a reason!

people who say that Cubase SX or Ableton are just as good as Pro Tools have probably never seen a Pro Tools HD Accel system or never really understood the way in which larger, more complex Pro Tools systems work! Theyre mates Probably just have an M-Box or Pro Tools M-Powered, which at a basic, out the box level, really are no different to Cubase SX or Abelton!

But its the HD & the TDM systems which really are the big cats in the audio industry, basically becuase of a couple of reasons! one would be the DSP flexability (the ability to run a large number of very high quality, CPU intensive plugins on a single Pro Tools TDM system with no affect on the performance!) that they offer!

Another would probably be the integration of high quality consoles and controllers specifically designed for Pro Tools such as the Control 24, the Digi 002, Command 8, the Icon etc etc. Also the fact that Pro Tools can be integrated with alot of ease with high quality analouge consoles such as the SSL AWS! offering you the best of both worlds really! Digital Editing and flexability, high quality analouge recording an mixing!

Another reason may be that Pro Tools RTAS (Real Time Audio Suite) and TDM (Time Division Multi-complex) are the highest quality plugins money can buy!! Focusrite, URS, etc all make and design plugins that a specifically designed to run in Pro Tools and Pro Tools only! meaning the Plugins that Pro Tools users have access to are of a very high quality!

There are other features such as the ease of the Key Commands that Pro Tools uses for Editing, the ability to share Pro Tools session files between Home and Professional users etc!

Granted, i'am a home Pro Tools M-Powered user, and in all honestly i probably dont have any more or any less power at my finger tips than those on this forum using Cubase, or Sonar at home etc, but i have learned alot about Pro Tools, its functions, the way you edit which can be applied to the larger HD and TDM systems which i now regularly use at college! So when the day comes that i will own a Pro Tools HD system, ill be ready! and believe me, thos Pro Tools HD and TDM systems really are powerfull!

i cant list everything!!! buy a f*cking book if you really want to know why Pro Tools is the industry standard!!

and in answer to the initial question, buy a Mac!

My Pro Tools cats know who they are! they, like me, understand why they are using the most powerful, flexible audio editing software the industry has to offer!

All those cats using Cubase, Ableton, Acid etc, thats all fair enough, you gotta start somewhere, but sooner or later youll realise, if you wonna be a Pro you gotta have the right Tools!

Wow Rob.. Interesting theory.. So, how do you account for people like myself who have been writing music for 20 years, previously exclusively with Steinberg (Pro16 through to CubaseSX) and have now settled for Ableton Live and have never been more productive? Also, how do you account for the groups like the White Strips who record all their albums in analogue without going through a single AD converter? Not to mention all the countless digitally recorded platinum albums that did not touch Pro Tools..

It feels appropriate that your post is in the Newbie forum; somehow I get the impression that you are a newbie to the music business? Your lack of knowledge would suggest so but forgive me if I am mistaken - I am just reading inbetween the lines but could well be wrong..

Anyway, would be great to hear some of your superior Profession ProTools tracks so please post a link - perhaps we can all learn from them..

Rob has proven on more than one occasion that he's a retard but some of ya'll have a funny style obsession with hatin Pro Tools and I wonder how many of you that hate it so much have ever used it.

To each his own.....

and to answetr the original question, no........it doesnt matter. The only difference is that a Mac will run PT just fine out of the box(with the exception of maybe havin to buy a compatible firwire interface) and a pre built pc(dell, gateway, etc.) may have parts that conflict with digi hardware. If you do a lil homework though you'll find that you can put together a pc that will not only outperform the most powerful mac but will also cost anywhere from 1k-2k less than a mac

By cooocooo1 Thu Oct 20, 2005 3:54 pm
another thing I should probably point out is that 99.9% of pros use macs for a couple of reasons...

PT was originaly a mac only program, it didnt become available for the pc until about 4-5 years ago. pros have been usin PT on macs since the beginning and are too busy working to be bothered with trying to learn new OS's and procedures with a program they already know how to work on a mac

also, PT was originaly only a hardware dsp system meaning that the computer was only used for running the program but all the power of running plugins, track count, etc. was done by outboard hardware dsp cards(what is now PT/HD). So the most powerful computer wasnt(and still isnt if you have a TDM system) necessary.

bottom line is that PT le is just that, LIMITED!

hope you're getting that endorsement check in the mail buddy.........

btw why dont you enlighten us as to what most industry cats are using for surround mixes???????

and as for the 'high quality controllers" you speak of......they are extremely overpriced (that is prolly the understatement of the year)......

if you have half a brain and the budget to design a DAW....you could do a lot better than some HD system, unless you wanna be like everyone else on the block and get ripped off like everyone else on the block
