UK newbie...couple of questions on purchasing a 1K?!

Hi folks,
been messing about in music production for a couple of months now and I think a MPC1000 is the way to go. Especially now I've been reading up on this OS update that Sparq has been so kindly, not to mention patiently with all the questions, filling everyone in on! Reason being that on the PC i tend to get distracted and can't stay focused cuz there's too many distractions, more sounds to download, more websites to read, more VST's and programs to take a play with.

Having an MPC means im gonna focus on that and aren't restricted to sitting on the PC where I'll just end up reading message boards. Means I can take it down my girls house, round my mates house and be alot more free to create! Like the fact that it's much more tactile and intuitive also!

Anyway the couple of questions I have are:

BEST / CHEAPEST PLACE TO PURCHASE FROM IN THE UK? Christmas is coming up but don't know if I can wait that long....wanna get the most bang for my bug (memory expansion etc) I know alot of the list prices are pretty much the same but then certain places are more willing to lower their price if you ring 'em up and say you can get it cheaper at so and so.....


Importing a SECOND HAND one from the US??? Before everyone tells me to SEARCH the forums...dont worry I HAVE! Wink Discovered that I won't need a stepdown converter as it's dual voltage no? However how does the deal with VAT and import tax work...what import duty rate wil I have to pay for an MPC?

Would be very grateful if I could get some quick answers back to these...no rush like Wink ....but I will appreciate it alot! Expect to be seeing more of me on here. I aim to produce US / Deep House (MAW, Blaze, Quentin Harris, Chez Darnier style) and Hip Hop.

sushi, i wouldnt bother getting one imported. if something is wrong with it or goes wrong it will be a big hassle for you to get it fixed / replaced. i took mine back and got it replaced on the second day cos one of the pads was sketchy.

as far as buying one in the uk goes, well you seem to know what to do already. search online for the best price then contact digital village and ask them to beat that price. (i'd buy from digital village before turnkey - turnkey is run by a bunch of idiots and are unreliable in my experiance).

after looking around the net for the last couple of hours I think that's the root i'm gonna go...couldn't find any clear answers regarding import tax and then there's always that issue of if anything goes wrong. For an extra bit of dash I guess it's worth having that safeguard....especially as the 1K seems to be a bit more hit and miss than the rest when it comes to build quality.

Probably gonna wait till Christmas now then before picking one up....desperate for one now but having something exciting and NEW on christmas day when everyones getting theres is always nice. Gotta keep myself busy till then to stop me going nuts! ha ha

Any clues as to whether the black facia is gonna be standard by xmas? Knowing how late the UK gets everything, especially japanese stuff (games consoles, games etc in the past) i'd say were gonna be lucky to get it by xmas'06!

Just a quick question, how much can the 128 mb ram be picked up for? I have an old PC in the garage with some spare memory on it but I gather it has to be a special sort (memory chips in banks of 2 or something?)

you want 144PIN PC133 256MB SODIMM RAM. there is a sticky thread at the top of the mpc1000 forum where different brands have been discussed, but Kingston seems to be the one to go with. thats what i have and its worked flawlessly for me. its laptop ram so it probably is not whats in your garage. check ebay and ebuyer.com etc for a decent price.

i mostly make hip hop beats, click on my sig if you wanna check em out.

oh and dont be suprised if you get flamed for getting your mpc as a christmas present! *any excuse to take cheap pot-shots in here!*

as for whether or not the black cased 1k's will be out by then, i have no idea. i guess it depends on how quickly they sell the last for the blue cased stock.

I think one of the best places to get your 1k from would be DJ Store. They're well helpful - ask 'em ANY question about pretty much any product either on the phone or e-mail, and they get back to you stupid fast with mad knowledge!

AND, next day delivery is free. Those guys know the score like an England Test Match! Last time I looked, they were selling 'em for £559.

Ha ha cheers. I always do that....read the Damier bit as Darnier the first time and since then my mind just seems to have me believe that it's Darnier.

Hi Sushi, i don't have anything yet mate, i've had the XL a couple months still getting to grips with it
