External SCSI storage question (CD-ROM)-MPC 2000

Hello,
I just purchased a used MPC 2000 (classic) and I need to settle on a storage option. What I was wondering is, would a SCSI CD-ROM drive load sample banks fast enough to use it for live performance? I don't want to use ZIPS because I'm well aware of their unreliability, it seems impossible to find an external SCSI card reader (at least one that's verified to work with an MPC), and a hard drive would be harder to back up (and would essentially allow less storage space). I'm just curious as to the load time because I'm not a big fan of dead air at shows and a CD-ROM seems like my best option (unless a card reader pops up). Thank you in advance for your advice.

Thanks for the link. I was aware of this site, but the question I was trying to ask is, would a SCSI CD-ROM have significantly longer loading time than a SCSI hard drive or card reader? I havent found info on that anywhere yet.

If loading times are critical to you I would sugest to get a 1000 for live usage (more portable than a 2k(xl)) + up to 128 megs of memory. You might be able to have all the samples + sequences preloaded in memory.

I fail to understand what load times have to do with a live performance. I load up once before the set starts and that is it.

If you have load something else in the, heaven forbid, middle of set, then you are either using the equipment wrong or have the wrong equipment.

I hear you on the dead air thing, but will a few seconds of load time make that much diference? If you're gonna hafta load, then there's gonna be some sort of pause to the music. So, while you're loading, the crowd will have to be distracted (see MC/ Master of Ceremonies) so just distract hem for an additional 20 seconds.

I have a SCSI cd-rom and a 1 Gig Jaz drive hooked up to my mpc 2000xl. The cd loads fast but the Jaz loads at least 2 times faster, maybe more.

Jaz drive works with XL? Can you use the full gig?

I imagine. I have it partitioned and am just up to part b on the disc. I found the jaz drive along with 4 1 gig discs at a garage sale.

I scooped it all including the scsi cable for 20 bones!
