Question on Chopping...

I have a mp1000 and have been using it for a few months now.
I also hear people talking about chopping up their samples......
I don't understand what their chopping.
I know what the function is and kinda how to use itbut what actual sounds are they chopping?
I know this sounds stupid but I don't get it.
I can understand like vocals and melodies being samples but why chop them up?
and I know it isn't just vocals that people chop.
ANY insight is appreciated.

Find a drum loop that has drums in it that you like.

Go into slice/chop whatever and highlight ONLY the drum sound that you like and cut it, place that cut/chop to a pad and no you have that drum available for you to use. That's chopping drums..

If a vocal or instrumental phrase is divided into separate notes, you can chop up the notes, and resequence them in a different order...

or you can play the same notes closer or farther apart to change the tempo of the melody..

or you can extract individual instrument or drum 'hits' and use them to create your own patterns

chopping up a phrase with long sustained tones leads to more artificial sounding results, but can also be cool for glitchy sounding stuff.
