mpc 4000... problem?

hi all

right, ive used search, but to no avail, predominantly coz im not entirely sure how to phrase what im looking for

right the scenario is this, i bought an mpc4000 second hand recently, and havent had much time to get round to using it. so the other day i decided to get stuck into it

problem is despite having the machine connected via usb to my computer and having the akaisys program installed from the cd i was given the mpc will NOT recognise the computer, when i turn it on it searches for disks and finds none

when i click on load, again it finds no disk. same goes for bringing samples over and such like

i was led to believe i could do all this via the computer, as well as use the machine to store sequences, songs and samples instead of buying an external drive

what i wanna if possible is:

1) is there something gone wrong here and how do i fix it?

2) is it actually possible to do what i am explaining? (i would imagine it is tho in fairness)

3) this software on the cd, how does it work, BRIEFLY?

i know you wouldnt think it from these questions, but im a music technology graduate, and i just cant for the life of me figure this out. im sure im just missing something massively obvious here somewhere, but wihtout a manual for the akai and the software, its not quite that obvious to me as it would be to anyone else

if you need more info on my questions or whatever please please let me know

want to get this all sorted out asap so i can get up and running

make sure you are using the most current USB driver, which can be found on the akaipro.com website...you may also want to download the instructions for installation and the aksys manuals if you dont already have them.
last thing, make sure you are using the USB port on the back of the mpc4k.

but just so i know what im looking for, how do i know its worked exactly?

will the akai recognise the computer as a hard drive when i turn it on? or will i get an mpc4000 drive in my computer to flash things over to the ram?

your computer will recognize the 4k once you run aksys...then you can just drag and drop files between the two. im not sure if the mpc will actually recognize your computer.

sorry for the questions, but im only in the process of printing out the manuals, and ive been a soft sequencer/sampler man for the 6 years of my production lifespan

don't think that's possible, though i may be wrong, i think you'd have to save them on the mpc itself, then transfer them (maybe using aksys). as i said though, i may be wrong - i've not used the 4k.

of course it is possible modnar, you shouldn't answer, unless you know. it creates confusion & missinformation.

when ak.sys is installed properly on you computer.


you will see an mpc 4000 icon in the ak.sys program.

if you click on mpc4000 it will show a memory chip icon, floowed by an icon for multi,programs,samples, midid files, and whatever drives you have attached to your MPC.

the computer will not see the mpc 4000 without the ak.sys software.

the mpc will not see the computer in it's own drive list. The mpc will only see a drive, if it is connect to the mpc.(usb, or scsi)

if you want to save your projects on the computer, ollow these steps.


step 1)create a sequence with samples on your mpc4000

step 2)launch ak.sys on your computer

step 3)create a folder on your comp to recieve the sequence

step 4) drag mpc memory from ak.sys to new folder

done.

I would also burn a cd for back up. you could use your mpc, or computer for this

it is really all quite simple.

does your mpc have hard drive?
does your mpc have cd/rw?
what computer are you using? pc or mac?

if all is not working properly, try a new cable

no hard drive on the mpc, but im due a new external drive anyway, so ill get a usb 2.0 drive that i can use on it

no cd/rw at the moment either, in the process of getting one tho

and im using an 64bit athlon 3200+ pc

i usually save everything from the 4k's RAM to its HDD before i attempt a transfer...cause you never know if something will crash...knock on wood.

so far aksys has been great to me...this program and the USB connectivity were big selling points for me getting the 4k in the first place.

h3lx, just so you know, the USB on the 4k is 1.0, and your computer's HD will essentially become an external drive once you got aksys up and running. so before you go buyin a bunch of gear, make sure you get something thats compatible, ie. check the forums and manuals for HD size limitations, file systems supported (NTFS vs. FAT32), etc.
