Problem with keyboard connected to 1000

I have the mpc1000 midi out A and the midi in 1 ports connected to the keybaord in & out ports. I turned the midi on, changed the pgm to 1 and changed it from drum to midi but it isn't working right. when I press the keys it is the drum sounds from the mpc and I'm not able to get the sounds off the keyboard. Am I doing something wrong?

Which keyboard? Put program to off, and midi to 1A and your keybd to channel 1.
