I was under the impression that the 16MB 72-pin FPM SIMM goes in one of the two drives in the front of the 2000xl then i saw how it looks obviously it wont fit. can someone tell me what exactly do i get so i can save my work.
-Do I run scsi cord from the mpc to a computer and save it there?
-is there a memory card of some sort that i can insert in the front and how does it look?
-do i dissemble the whole 2000xl and install the long 16MB 72-pin FPM SIMM myself somehow?

I know these are probably dumb questions but i have a turntable with mixer, a computer, a keyboard, and the2000xl and im stuck.

Now you have me lost. If you have memory sticks then those go inside the MPC. Your XL should have a floppy drive or zip drive already installed. You can install a mutlireader card in it or You can get a SCSI drive for it. Does that help you any. If you dont have a clue about installing it best bet is to hit up one of your local music stores for assistance.

Does your mpc have a drive with more than one slot? If so it should have letters on it: MS/SD/SM and CF. If you dont have that then you have a zip drive. To install the 16mb ram board you have to turn your MPC upside down, remove the base plate, and you will see in the bottom left where to install the boards. They only go in one way so dont try and force it! If you are having more problems pm me.

Whus happenin Mike Nizzle ? First off, for your question about SCSI:

If you gonna use a ZIP drive, then you'll need a DB-25 to SCSI-2 cable, which can be found on eBay, www.vstservice.com or pretty much any computer store. You can also search for DB-25 SCSI on google.

Now for the memory aka RAM (Random Access Memory):

The MPC2000 XL takes 72-pin SIMMS, either FastPage or EDO.. Here's a quote directly from Akai's website:

Q. What type of memory will work in my MPC2000XL?
A. You should use 72-pin Fast Page or EDO SIMMS with a speed rating of 70 ns (nanoseconds) or faster. They can be either parity or non-parity (if parity is present it will be ignored), and should have gold leads. The MPC2000XL supports 16 MB and 32 MB SIMMS. However we recommend using 2 x 16 MB SIMMS because the manufacturing specifications of 32 MB SIMMS have changed slightly since the introduction of the MPC2000XL and we have discovered that not all 32 MB SIMMS will work.

As for the memory stick, well, that all depends.... do you have a card reader installed in ya MPC2KXL ? or is the floppy drive still installed ?

If you purchased the MPC2000XL-MCD, then yes, you do have the card reader installed, and that means you can use either a Compact Flash or CF card, Smart Media card and SD or Secure Digital card. These types of cards can be found at virtually ALL computer stores, BestBuy, CircuitCity, WalMart, etc; usually in the camera department.
