i used to wonder about that...

basically 2 things have to happen at once::
1. you get good at taking any sound and working with it, shaping it

2. you collect different sounds/sound sources and learn how they sound

Eventually the two things meet in the middle, and anything you hear in your head, you will know what sound it is or how to create it.

Like now when i hear a track i will recognize many of the specific sounds, and for the rest i would have a good idea about how to get something similar.

I used to think "im hearing a swooshy noise"

now i think "im hearing a backwards 909 hihat with heavy reverb panning from left to right"... or something.

It's amazing how much you really do learn after a while. I've been working at it about 8 years and in the last couple of years things seemed to get a lot easier.

But in the meantime do the other way and just "f* around wit some samples and put it together"... cause you will learn lots, get new ideas and build your skills.

practice programing your drums, practice programing your drums, practive programing your drums...

mess around with layering your drum sounds (layering different kicks together, layering different snares together to get them sounding how you want 'em)

choosing samples to use. yep, just try and experiment with fitting different sounds together - chop, filter, chop, filter, chop, filter..

be prepared to spend time on your tracks getting all this right and next time (or soon enough) it will come a lil easier.

arranging and a final mix - ask someone else cos i rarely bother with that stuff

Arranging is done how the rapper that's gonna have the beat wants it.

If it's underground shit you just make a rough mix and give them the stereo file, but if they pay you much and the beat is on a big release, you could give them the beat in multitracks so they can mix it themself.

Theres alot of ways I go about it.
I sample lots and as I go through samples the ones that stick in my head, or two or more that I recognize will fit together, I use. If I have a melody in my head I try to create it as close as possible, then sometimes I find a sample that fits over it perfectly, I would have never have been able to imagine the sample in my head but it works so well I use it.
