HELP Bass Question HELP

Obviously I am very new to this, but was curious to how bass gets thrown in songs. Is it samples from a real electric bass, or is it some kind of midi controller with bass software. If both which is best, I'm going for the kind of sound that Tribe had with the bass bouncing at all different notes.

you can do it either way. neither is better than the other, though some may argue, imo. Sometimes i'll sample a bass solo and build a song around the sample. other times i'll have some other instrument sampled and need to fit a bass into the song, so i'll use my keyboard or a bass soundset on the mpc. it's all situational. not sure of the tribe sound you are describing though, btw, what do you mean by that?

John Morris, thanks for your thoughts. Um....what do I mean by tribe called quest's bass sound.....it's just different than most other groups, it bounces all up and down, can't really put it into words man, maybe you will realize what im talking about someday. Try listening to their song Find my way and see what I mean.

That sound you're talking about just comes from hitting the pads in 16 Levels mode and playing the bass at different notes.
You can sample a bass into your machine, hit the 16 Levels mode, pick the pad you assigned the bass to and then hit Do It in the menu.
It assigns the original bass to a pad and then creates different notes for the rest of the pads, with the low end notes at the bottom and high notes at the top.
