Keyboard to mpc1000

Hey guys,

sorry i know this has been covered before. ive read tons of shit about it but its still confusing me. today i was messing around with this old keyboard i was given. a roland ep 5 digital piano. its got midi in and out on the back. anyways, i went to teh music store and grabbed 2 midi cables. went from:
mpc out -- > ep5 in
mpc in --->ep5 out

now that was all cool. i couldnt get it working at teh start but then i figured it out after a while. now, the problem is, if i play the ep 5 sounds from either the actual unit or the mpc pads, i wanted it to record to the mpc. sure, when i play it whilest recording, it records, but it only plays via the keyboard speakers. and if i unplug the midi cable, then i lose the sound.

i know midi cables dont carry audio..so is what im looking to do impossible?

i know i can sample the keyboards output via direct recording on the new JJ os, but its pretty buggy at the mo. is there a different way to do it?

any help would be appreciated..just getting the hang of this.

Your doing what you are wanting to do its just you DONT FULLY understand the process. The sounds will play from the Keyboard the way you have it connected thats what its suppose to do. The MPC is acting as the master/sequencer for the keyboard. Now you could connect the outputs to the INPUT feature on the mpc1000 or run the keyboard and mpc1000 outs to a mixer and now both will play out of your speakers/monitors or headphones connected the mixer. Real easy and simple.

now wiht the inputs on the mpc, are you talking about the digital input? or the analog?

but isnt that basically using the direct record function? i would have to change to track 61-64

use the input-thru feature and you'll hear the roland ep 5. if you want to record the actual audio, then use the direct record. otherwise you'll still record the midi data from the roland and it'll play through the input-thru.

so ill either have to use direct record, or record both the mpc and the keyboard onto my computer or an external recorder.

yeah, you got it now.
also, keep in mind that the input thru funtion allows you to assign the input source through either the stereo outs or the 4 assignable outs. use whatever works best for you when tracking out to your computer or external recorder.
