I've seen the question a billion times, I've just recently learned myself and I'm amazed so I thought I'd share the knowledge with the rest of my fellow noobies out there. There are hundres of ways to sample, chop, etc. This is just the way that I prefer..and until someone proves me wrong this may be the easiest way. You can refer to my first sampled song; it's called "You don't know" to see what the outcome of using this technique will give you. The song is here: www.soundclick.com/augusta ("You don't know")
What you need:
Reason 3.0
Recycle
Sound Forge
I start with finding a song. The sample I used for my song was Bobby Byrd's "You don't know" this is the same sample that was in the Jay-Z song "you don't know".
After finding the song I import the song into Sound Forge and "chop" it, the reason I chop it is because when I begin my slicing process in Recycle the shorter the song is the greater the possibility is that i'll be able to map each slice out on my keyboard. In other words if the song that I find is 4:00 minutes long and i want 4 second slices that's equal to 100 slices..there are only 88 keys on my keyboard so this isn't gonna work...So what I do is I divide that 4 minute song into into something smaller..In my song I took the first 40 seconds of the song and "chopped" it..after I "chopped it in sound forge i saved it to my desktop.
After saving it to the desktop I opened the 45 second chop in Recycle and moved the slider bar so that it automatically sliced my 45 second song. After that I clicked "save as" and saved the sliced sample as a ".rex" file on my desktop.
After creating that .rex file I loaded the rex into the NN-XT and it automatically assigned each individual slice to a key on my keyboard, from that point each key represented a different part of the song.
I basically fiddled around until I found something added a kick, snare, high hat, etc. and that was that!! This was a very, very shortened version explanation of how to accomplish sampling I just wanted to share that with those of you that are completely baffeled on how it's done. I didn't go into changing the root key in the NN-XT or changing the attack, release, etc. (Yuo can read your manuals on that one)
Hopefully this is enough info to point you in the right direction. Good Luck!! If anyone needs help or has questions just hit me up!!!
Quick Guide:
1. Find song
2. Cut out portion you want to sample (should be short 45 sec. or less)
3. Import 45 second or less sample into recycle
4. create slices by sliding bar in Recycle, then save rex file.
5. Import rex file into the NN-XT
6. Fiddle around until you find a groove
7. Add high hats, snares, etc.
8. Send my the royalty check.
