I am running Reason 3.0 and i have an M-audio axiom 25...i have been researching, reading, trying trial and error but i cannot get this to work.
I simply want to save what I play on my keyboard as a track in the mpc thru midi. Although my keyboard is a controller/interface, i still can't get it to work..Can anyone help?

tools:

This has been covered many times here but since it's Christamas time.....

Midi Keyboard out----> MPC Midi In

MPC Midi Out ----> MOTU Midi interface

On the Mpc set the track output to S:MIDI A or B. Whatever one corresponds to the physical Midi cable coming out of the MPC. You can use any Midi channel at this stage but stick with Midi channel one for the moment.

Setup a Mixer and a Synth/Drum Machine in reason. Check your Midi settings in Reason to see if the MOTU Midi interface is available.

Reason should now receive Midi data from the keyboard via the MPC.
Just hit record on the MPC and away you go.

I'm curious, why don't you just track the controller through Reason?

By omarphi215 Sat Dec 16, 2006 10:52 pm
Thanks a million, I will try that and let u know how it goes....and I know the topic has been covered, but I needed step by step...I really appreciate the assistance. As fas as y I am not tracking thru reason....I only want to use reason for sounds and nothing else. I have a keyboard controller and not a board with preloaded sounds (triton, motif etc...)..I want to simply be able to record what i play from my keyboard into the mpc via MIDI.
I tried a million ways and it didn't work...ok about a thousand times
thanks again
peace and happy holidays

When you set up the keyboard through the mpc, how do you prevent the keyboard from playing sounds already setup on the mpc pads? And how do you prevent the mpc from playing notes on the keyboard?
For instance, if I record a seq of a 2 bar midi track, then try to overdub drums on top of it, the pads will play both the drum sound and the midi.
Is there a way for the keyboard to bypass the pads? OR must I record the midi and pads seperately?

Remember most Midi outputs have sixteen different channels. You're Keyboard has sixteen different Midi outputs (if it has one Midi out). The MPC has 32 Midi out/in channels because it has two Midi outputs. The Midi outs on your keyboard correspond to the MIDI ins on the MPC or Reason.

Your MPC can be setup to receive on one particular midi channel.
It might be in Omni mode at the moment. Which means that it will receive data on any incoming Midi channel. If you hit "open window" on your Midi output on the MPC you can select which Midi channel the MPC receives on.
Same on Reason in the channel Mixer at the top of the screen

i presume the USB from the controller to the interface should be included in the above instructions, no?

Anyhow, i've tried the above configuration and still can't seem to record my keyboard "action" in the MPC. My interface is the MboxII.

My midi interface in Reason is pretty straight forward (and it sees the mbox). My MPC is set to Midi and the corresponding midi channel.. i press record on the MPC, play my keyboard...play the MPC back.... and...... Nothing! lol

Are there other setting that i should be aware of? Reason?Protools?2000XL?

Do i need protools "open" in order for the interface to work? On or off i doesnt work for me.

Word. I understand what your saying.
But here is my predicament: I have a 2 bar drum loop in the mpc. I want to add a piano sound from Colosuss into the loop. While 'overdubbing' the piano into the 2 bar loop, I notice that some of the keyboard keys are triggering sounds from the mpc pads AND playing piano notes from Colosuss. Or vice versa: If I want to add a snare to the loop, when I press the pad that has the snare sound, I hear the snare AND the keyboard note at the same time. It's like the pads, and some of the midi keys are linked.

You have to put the MPC track you are recording into on Midi- I believe it defaults to Drum.. (hopefully, you are recording the piano onto a separate track in the MPC other then the drum loop track). You Have to pick Midi A/B 1-16 and it should only play what midi instrument you have assigned to the respective number.

Thanks, you put me on the right path. I figured out how to 'seperate' the two. I have the drums on track 1, and midi on track 2.
On track 1, I had to change the S:DRUM field to OFF, and track two is set to MIDI.
Thanks for the assist!

I am having the same problem BKfire was having...i would go to track 2 for example, switch it from drum to MIDI, I hit record (overdub) to record my next rack and i hear nothing from the keyboard thru the mpc. I can only hear the keys on the pc speakers. I am sure I will get it soon.

Do you have headphones connected to the mp? If so, then maybe you AREN'T supposed to hear anything from the keyboard through the mp. Afterall, the keyboard is connected via midi, and midi is only sending data, NOT sounds. If you hear the sounds from the pc speakers, then that is what's supposed to happen, and you have everything connected correctly.
I could be wrong though. I'm still a noob too. :)

my problem seems to have disappeared when i booted up last night. Same connections as the day before.

The only thing i can think of was that i made the midi connections(computer, mbox, etc...) and then tried to use the system WHICH DIDN"T WORK without rebooting.

Maybe the reboot of the system resolved my issue.
