Does anyone not chop in their MPC? If so, how do you chop?

Just wondering b/c I have a couple friends that don't use their MP to chop samples. One chops in his ASR-10 and then just uses the MP for drums and sequencing. The other chops on the computer and then brings it to the MP, don't know how but that's what he told me. What are the benefits/drawbacks to chopping or not chopping on your MP?

Its all about preference and workflow. Some like to use a computer and one of the many .wav editors available (SoundForge, Audacity, etc) to chop and the put sounds on floppy, zip, or cf card to load into the MPC. Some prefere to sample directly or load whole samples off disk and then chop in the mpc trim/zone function. I have MPC 2000 classic without 16 zone so I have to chop each hit and export to new sound. I actually enjoy this way and it is not too cumbersome for my tastes. Do whatever suits your needs/work flow best.

Try out Soundforge or Audacity (its free) and see if you like it for chops.

i chop in either the 1k or on audition. i use the computer because its easier for me to get the exact chops i want, and for me atleast its alot faster. the only part i dont like about it is you have to load each sound in after, whereas if i load a sample into the MPC and then chop it, i can make a new PGM right after.

its all about preference. definitely try out some wav editors though. audacity is the free one i think

Can Audacity be used for chopping?

I work a lot on my DAW for sampling, all my samples comes to my DAW first, either through my record player, a CD or a musical instrument. So in that way it's practical to use chop them up on the DAW and lay them on the CF chopped and ready to use. But sometimes I just sample a lot of shit all at once and I don't care to sit and chop everything, but I sit and work on my MPC and I come across something that's interesting I just chop it up there.

With the 3.06 OS chopping on the MPC is a breeze and I do it just as quickly as on the computer.

I know Audacity, I meant if it has a special Chop function or Plugin, cause if not it's not much help if you need to cut and paste each slice by hand.

Well im not sure, I never use auto chop personally, it takes half the fun out of sampling for me at least. I like to chop manually. In Soundforge you can select the start point with the mouse, set endpoint, ctrl-e for paste to new sound, then save. Very efficient and quick. Move start point behind end point to create a "new" end point for next sound. If you want auto chop, recycle might be a handy tool, but I have never used it.

Auto chop is kinda lame, but that just my opinion. Whatever your workflow is so be it. I enjoy the whole process, even if it is the old way of doing things. Maybe I'm not as spoiled with new technology. I mean i'm still using floppies!

Sound Forge is my sample editor of choice but it's all about personal preferences. I think you can download a fully functional demo....

Why is chopping on the MPC with the 3.06 a breeze? What are the new functions then? I have the old Akai 2.1 OS

my tip save $200 cop a sp 505..its has a auto chop function an automatically assigns them to 12 pads...thats what i use...

i have a korg electribe ES-1 sampler, sometimes i sample into that and it chops the sample up into a dozen different pieces automatically..and than i resample everything into the 2KXL all chopped and EQ'ed.
sometimes i just use the es-1 as an effects module and than just run it straight into the 2KXL and use the zoning feature, just depends on how im feeling, cuz im still learning how to use the zoning..so i dont always use that
