simple stuff to get me chopping

I am getting ok at the beat making, I want to learn to make nice melody;s over the top i see peeps just hit pads and it sounds really nice I am struggling cos all the stuff i sample is well complex. any hints on some more practical stuff i can sample? names please.

try sampling children's albums, they usually have simple arrangements....

simplicity is not so much the issue as much as density is. look for "open samples" where there is not a ton of different instruments layered on top of each other.

do you chop breaks yet? and by chopping a break, i mean this:

many songs start with just the drummer laying down the beat. this means that there are no other instruments playing at that time, right? this is what we call an "open sample."

now some genius along the lines figured out that you can sample that and put each hit on a different pad, creating a multisampled drum kit. this is what has powered boom bap drum programming for ages now.

now think about this - why dont you treat every open sample like a drumbreak? chop it all note per note and then you have the same control as you do with a drum break. you can reorder it, retune it, layer it, filter it, while leaving the rest of the sample unchanged.

you can create 100% convincing new patterns/melodies this way if you're good enough, and if you do it well nobody ever knows it was even chopped.

ha thats the secret i have tried that, im ok with the breaks but the samples of other things always sounds staggered!!

The best tip I have to start off with is to chop it really simple.
If you've got a 2 bar sample, chop it into 8 parts for example. It all depends how the music in the sample is though, but this is an easy way to start off.
