if this is teaching you to suck eggs then im sorry its for the new comer.
I was taught to do my chops (to start with) where the snare and kick is or where id imagine it is.
some music that aint so easy esp if there is no kick or snare, so what I have started doing whilst chopping is play along to the sample on my keyboard drum sounds then I can imagine where I want the chop to be.
I thought that may be of use. it was to me.
