Ok, I've just been experimenting w/ a few pad layouts... e.g. playing Kicks on A3 and Hats on A4 both with my right hand and having snares on A2 with a cymbal on A1... Other pad use for bass/instrumentals/samples...

Anyone have any tips on pad layout and prepping stuff to play live? ...seeing as i never did piano/drums/etc, I got a lot of trouble co-ordinating both hands at once :p

Which ever way works best for you although Akai do seem to have suggested one (at least on the 2500) which I quite like. If you got a 2500 (or 1000 I guess) and you go to the Program mode then go to the Note page you can hit each pad and on the top right of the screen it gives the name of the drum (according to the GM standard for that note).

The default layout is something along these lines.

A2 - Kick

A5 - Rim Shot
A6 - Snare

A3 - Close Hi Hat
A7 - Open Hi Hat
A8 - Pedal Hi Hat

A9->A12 - Toms

A13->A16 - Symbols (Crash, Splash, Ride & Ride Bell)

Obviously this is just one layout which someone thought was good but it works for me.

I had an M-Audio trigger finger and the default GM patch on that was a bit different, I think it was something like:

A1 & A2 - Kicks

A3 & A4 - Snares

A5->A8 - Toms

A11 - Closed Hi Hat
A12 - Open Hi Hat

A13->A16 - Symbols

It was ok but I like the Akai one better but in the end it essentially doesn't matter so long as it works for you...you might also find you can do different rhythms and patterns with different setups so just experiment.
