I recommend you listen to the source your sampling from (record or cd) in the headphones of your dj mixer first if you have one. Make sure that you have them on correctly where R is on your right ear and L is on your left. I know it sounds stupid but I know alot of people who just throw the cans on and don't take this in to account. Most of the time there is some panning going on, so a trick I use is to listen to one earphone at a time and see which one has the more defined sounds. Usually the kick is either dead center or slightly right, same thing goes for the snare. Hi hats are usually tend to be placed slightly left. If your dj mixer has a balance L-R knob then you can also reference with that. If you don't have a dj mixer than you should have the ouputs of your source connected to the inputs of your board, daw, or your pc interface stereo. Make sure they are not linked in your daw or pc and pan them hard left and hard right to get a stereo connection. Then you can mute each channel individually and get a good reference there. Bottom line it does matter if your sampling your drums stereo or mono, so choose wisely.
