there appears to be some linguistic confusion going on here.

I ask you straightforwardly again: what do you mean by insisting there is no "gain" on the MPC4000 sampler engine, only "level" ?

What you are saying does not make sense in English.

Saying "there is only level on the MPC4000" is not a proper sentence.

In English, we speak of the level *of* something (i.e. the level of a digital signal - we can say we "change the level") ... basically, in simple language, the "level" is just how loud it is.
We can boost the level or cut the level.

"Gain" in electronics generally means, qualitatively, to increase the level of a signal.
You can also talk about "reducing the gain", which means the same thing as attentuating .... both mean to reduce the "level".


On the MPC4000, the signal path can be considered as flowing from the inital sample, through the zone, through the keygroup (where it is modified by the filter and the amp envelope and the mod matrix), through the program, through the part and out through the outputs.

As the digital signal flows through this virtual path, you can can boost or cut it's level (i.e. apply gain, or attenuate it) using the controls:
- ZONE LEVEL
- KEYGROUP LEVEL
- filter attenuation
- AMP env
- mod matrix (source) >>> AMPLITUDE
- PROGRAM LEVEL
- PART LEVEL
- MIDI cc07

Most of these have a defaul position of 00dB
But you can apply GAIN to the signal (increase its LEVEL) up to +6dB
or reduce the gain (attenuate) (reduce its LEVEL) up to -60dB.

***HOWEVER: all those level controls in the list affect the SAME internal gain stage in the MPC4000 sample enginer signal processing flow. They're not independent.

Finally then the signal reaches the GLOBAL LEVEL control, then out into the real world.


What don't you (or Mr Nakamura in Japan) understand about this?
