MICS?

I am in the market to purchase a mic for recording sounds and using them within my beats. I was wondering if anyone can suggest a good resource for reading up on the different MICS used within the field. Also, the different uses a particular MIC has over the other, etc...

high end for vocals Neumann u-87 and up to sonny mic
hobby or home sure sm57, rhode, blue bottle, Audio Technica AT2020 Studio Microphone, Studio Projects C1 Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone etc.

I am looking to get a condenser mic that is omnidirectional. I am probably looking to spend a max of $600 - $700. Anyone know of any model off the top of their head that is good?
