monitor setup

I was wondering what are some good monitors and how you would hook them up to your computer and stuff for your MPC . I'm completly new to this so it might sound dumb but thanks to everyone that responds

What MPC, computer, soundcard (If you have one) mixing desk (if you have one) do you have

I have an MPC 1000 that i just bought and an iMac i dont know what sound card it has. Hope that information helps

With that setup you are quite limited - In an ideal situation you should purchase a standalone sound card that has multi in's and out so you can A) Connect your monitors to it B)Connect your 1000 to it and C) Connect your IMac to it giving you a more flexible setup. A step further could be to purchase a XYZ channel mixer but it depends how you intend to go about making and recording your music

Without the soundcard and especially a mixer, you could only connect the monitors to the MPCs stereo outs to hear the MPC Playback through them. The downside to this is your IMac wont be able to play through your them at the same time. As there is no device (a soundcard) to distribute audio between the two, output can only be from one or the other

As for your question about some 'good monitors' - Monitors is something that is better discussed with a budget attached or you just end up going round and round in circles getting lost in everyones opinions. To me, a good pair of monitors could cost 1000's of £ where to someone else they may be a set for £150

If you have a certain amount of money to spend, then it can be suggested that for that amount XYZ are or could be the best bang for your buck. Atleast this way, you have a more accurate starting point. The rest will be down to your own tastes and research

so what if I buy a small mixer for like a hundred bucks would I be able to connect everything to that

In theory, yes but if your only willing to put $100 into a mixer, (unless you get a good quality 2nd hand one at one hell of a bargain) I suggest you get some headphones for now and just work direct from the MPC. That $100 would be more effective if it was put towards a soundcard with a midi interface etc.... Remember your going to want to record your beats etc down to your comp at some point right

If your going to do this, do it the right way. Buy cheap, buy twice!

Seriously, Its not as clean cut to just make suggestions. Its kinda gotta suit and meet your ideas, needs and visons for making music. For instance, the software you will use to record your music can play an important part in what soundcard to buy...Theres lots of different factors really. I can tell you to buy something but you may not need all the bells and whistles it has to offer. You even may need more (i doubt it - lol)

well all i Need really is all the equipment for a basic setup. I have an mpc and now i just need everything else i really dont know what i want but to get started and learn and have the basic setup to sample and record

Ok...To me, a basic setup would look a little like this;

*MPC
*Mixer - 8 ins (Atleast 4 Mono inputs) with 3band EQ
*Software Sequencer to record and mix your music in. I.e Cubase,Sonar,Protools etc etc. You only need one
*Midi keyboard controller (2 octave)
*Usb, or a Firewire 4ins 4out minimum Soundcard - Pref 1/4" jack sockets) with or without midi I/O ports -
*Midi interface 2x2 if soundcard don't come with it built it.
*Usb Turntable???
*Active Monitors (Active meaning self powered) $300 range
*Headphones
*cables (1/4 " jacks and possibly RCA phonos)

The exact gear you get is not for me to choose. I suggest you do some research to familiarise yourself with whats out there. Then when youv'e got a few ideas and queries etc check back for some feedback
