Personally, I don't **** with any of the "free" kits or sounds on the net..They can become a huge problem if your serious about making money w/your music, just in terms of rights of use..I for one ain't trying to get sued..Anyway this forums sister-site (mpc-samples.com) has a ton of great kits & sounds for sale..I recently copped the "East Coast Phat" pack and was very happy with it..now I have hundreds of great kicks, snares, snaps, claps, and hats all cleared for use..

I said MAKE YOUR OWN SOUND. What i mean is u can create a sound u like wit it or either keep it as is and go from there. The sounds u use are samples to. U can never get away from samples. Keyboards, guitars,ect.. are all types of sample sounds. Now when u start looping sounds that me and you both could easily identify is from a james brown, lenny williams, ect record then i can see the questioning/hesitation in it. But to close this up yeah the sample may not be yours initially but its your creativity put into it to create a new sound from it. Im refering to making drums, snares, hi hats, ect...

I am new to this sampling lark and really dig creating new beats from loops of obscure old vinyl (mainly for my own pleasure). Can someone clarify once and for all what the copyright law is? How would I go about getting permission to clear a sample if I wanted to release a track commercially? And what comeback would there be if an uncleared sample is used - is it just monetary (i.e. royalties go to the samplee like in Bitter Sweet Symphony) or is it a criminal offence? What happens if more than one uncleared sample is used in a track (i.e. do you pay all royalties split to both samplees or do you actually pay full royalties to each so infact make a loss)? Did the Dust Brothers clear all samples for Paul's Boutique? The Avalanches? Maxinquaye? etc...

Would be really interesting to hear the definitive answer. I guess this may vary from country to country (I am in the UK).

Yeah it does....sort of....I don't sample much, (music) but I respect the art.....and the big sites with "free sounds" are mostly samples that are public domain or cleared in some other way.....and there is no way to copyright a percussion sample......
