Having Touble to Master my MPC while Slaving the fantom

i have a midi out cable going from my mpc to the in of the roland fantom
i set my fantom to be a slave to the midi

i went to mixer on my 1k and set input through to on
i went to midi/sync mode in my 1k and set out to A

for some reason when i press record/play on the 1k, it doesnt do the same on the fantom


any suggestions? Do I need a mixer?
