Question about layouts when creating drum programs

I'm using an MPC2000. I just got it. My question is when your creating a drum kit, is there a specific way you layout the sounds to the pad? Meaning, do you always put a snare on this pad or a hi-hat on this pad? Is there a standard way to lay out the kit in order for the best results?

I personally usually keep all the kicks on the bottom row, snares above that, hats above that then any other percussion/cymbals/weird stuff on the top row.

Not too long ago I tried keeping the same arrangement but vertically (kicks on the left row etc) but I didnt like that too much, might try it again tho.

I like to to program a kick on pad 1, open hi-hat or cymbal w/decay assigned on pad 5, a snare on pad 2 and other percussion sounds on pad 6. I then tend to assign other drum sounds into pads 3,4,7, & 8 for layering over the first quadrant of pads. If I chop up a melody (piano, horns whatever) into 8 parts with zone, Ill program into pads 9-16 and play them back in whatever order. If the chops take up more than 8 pads, Ill hit the next pad bank.

Seasinz is dead on tho, whatever you find comfortable. The mpc doesnt come with preprogrammed sounds. Just set it up how you want the beat to feel (if that makes any sense.)

If you want a suggestion straight from akai, look at the labels above each pad on the mpc3000. Each pad is labelled with a suggested drum sound.
