Additional Vinyl Noise When Slicing A Sample

Hi all,

I normally just search out answers but couldn't find a reason as to why this was happening. I guess it's more of a general interest thing than a necessity.

I'm recording a sample off a numark pt-01 (the protable one, and yes I am still rocking the generic cartridge which I know is no good but just learning at the moment) straight into my MPC1000. Anyways the vinyl (depsite my best efforts at cleaning) is pretty beaten up and dirty but the background record noise isn't actually that bad.

However, when I use TRIM mode to SLICE it, just into two parts say, it's like the noise coming off the record doubles in volume to the original sample before it was sliced. I was jsut wondering why it might be doing this and how to remedy it if possible.

Could it have something to do with the fact I'm recording in stereo? It doesn't seemt o do it with other samples though.

this never happened to me. i think i read another thread like this here. i dont know what could be wrong. but you can always try sampling into your computer (if you have one) first and doing a bit of noise reduction or click/pop eliminator and get rid of some noise before sending to the mpc.

just a guess....but you're using cheap cables right?Maybe step up and get some mogamis or monster cables.Alot of times that's the problem also move the mpc and record player away from speakers,computers etc.

i have not used a 1k in along time but if i remember correctly the mpc slices its samples into mono so if you have a stereo sample it is going to take the sum of the 2 chans and combine them when you slice them and could be making the vinyl louder due to this. I would say check a sample by just sampling it in mono and try the slice again and also take a stereo sample and use the mpc to change it into mono before you chop it and see what happens. just a suggestion as the vinyl noise is going to be on both chans and may get worse when summed into 1.
