I've been looking at the fusion for the past 3 weeks and have been really interested in buying one. On the other hand I found a fantom Xa on my local craigslist for $650 that I can get down in price!

I hear the presets on the fantom are great but I'm looking to tweak and layer the hell out of those presets. The question is will I be able to let's say sample a certain sound from a record and layer it with some of the presets, or get the fusion that I hear can do this plus more but I've been reading bad reviews!

Fantom and Fusion users get at me so I can make up my mind, or if there are any suggestions I'm open to hear them!

I would go for the Fusion. I'm on my second one. I've had both versions of them and I like the feel of the keys a whole lot better than the Fantom Xa. But I want a Korg Karma and to me the feel of those keys suck, too. The presets are pretty nice on the Fantom Xa but I have never been too fond of Roland sounds for some reason. They're very solid bread and butter sounds to me which would work great in a mix. I think it's the environment I'm always having to play them in which takes a lot away. A noisy music store like Guitar Center. I think the presets on the Fusion aren't all that great either to be honest but I do love the sound capabilities of the Fusion. The forum support and the free sounds from Hollow Sun are a major plus. I never had any major problems with my first Fusion. If I had I wouldn't have bought a second. The Fantom has an SRX slot for one board and the Fusion has no expansion slots but you can save your sounds to the hard drive. Me, I'd go for the Fusion but the Fantom Xa is still very appealing for the price. Maybe look into the Juno-G if you want some Fantom X sounds. I think the Fantom Xa has some Fantom S sounds. I don't know what your maximum spending price is but say for $700 you have quite a few options. Alesis fusion 6HD. Korg Triton Le, TR-61, or a KARMA. Roland Fantom Xa, Juno-G, Fantom FA-76, Fantom S. I think the Fusion has the most bang fo the buck and I'm using mine with a MPC1000. Very nice combo. I hope this helped a little.
