Good Records To Sample From

I know people dont generally give out where they get their samples from, but im trying to get started sampling on my new mpc 2000 and am looking for some good breaks and loops. any help please?

I usually look for old funk and soul records . Big afros are usually a plus.

You can make single cycle waveforms for your MPC out of damn near anything. And that usually doesnt require much at all, just a few random records with semi-decent sounds.

Any record that may have an intresting musical section or open drumbreak. This can be any type of record.
I sampled the usual stuff like soul (isaac hayes, isley brothers, millie jackson) and jazz like stanley turentine, wes montegomery. Just stuff lots of peoples have in their crates.
I also sampled weird ass stuff like Dutch folk singers and Dutch pop songs, a weird ass lord of the rings record, 80's popsongs like Wham, Classical stuff, modern orchestra stuff...
Just anything. Just dig and after a while u'll know what kind of records will work for u. I know that any type of record with a spacey cover is a hit for me.

Orchestrated movie film scores (not sound tracks) and Classic Rock from the 70's... trust me on this!

thanks alot. ive got a nice little collection, but its mostly stuff i cant find any breaks or anything in, maybe i just gotta look a little harder. im goin out to dig this weekend ill def look for that stuff thanks.

I even sample Cumbia music. Check out Homegrown Greenery on my myspace. So start diggin' in ya grandma's stash.

If you just want a classic break to learn how to chop, buy yourself a copy of 'Impreach the President' by the Honey Drippers and a copy of 'Funky Drummer' by James Brown. If you can't get a dope beat using these records, then you should give up now.

If your records are short on obvious breaks, try to sample individual sounds and make your own beat from that. I think that's the direction a lot of MPC users are going now that almost every break under the sun has been used hundreds of times. Then, when you do find some nice breaks, you will have the techniques to turn them into something new and less recognizable.

thats just not true. There are still breaks out there that has never been touched.

Yeah that's why I said "almost". I'm a old-ass who has been collecting records for a long time, so I have my share. It's just that when I look at this forum and see a lot of newbs post up the same dollar records over and over, I think it might be harder for them to come up with something which has never been touched. If all you have is a handful of commons from the local junk store, I think you better be choppin em up small.

Besides, people can put out brand new breaks on wax right?

The sample track they have up has a break, but it's stale compared to some of the other joints on here. The recording and pressing is top notch. Also keep an eye out for the movie Wheedle's Groove coming to a film festival near you. I just saw it and it's well worth seeking out if you are a digger or just love the funk.

dont LOOK!!! .......LISTEN,dont try to find something just like that, you have to listen and let it pop out at you, build your library start by sampling one shot's samples hihats ,drums cymbs, learn to chop ......read the manual before jumping in trus it. took me aweek bfore i turned my 2kxl onstudy the manual then get in to it and it will make your life that much more easier...best thing you can doforyourself really

ive been workin with it at least a couple hours a day im starting to really get some good stuff goin

I actually ran into a nice break on a big band & swing album. Wasnt really a break but the way it broke down the middle of it was boom bap. Layerd a snare from another record and then took the skull snaps break. Possiblities are always open.

Yea keep a note book and keep track of songs you here that has any open percussion. Whether it be a full break or just a snare, grab and build your collection.
