My sister visited over the holidays. one morning she was up before me so she went into my studio and browsed thru my vinyl collection (modest lil collection just a couple crates)... when i got ujp she asked "hey, where is all your soul? We didnt grow up listening to this stuff" Admittedly when i dig at the record shops i purposefully avoid typical finds. I end up with old b-bop and big band even old movie / Broadway play soundtracks etc. ya know off color stuff like old orchestral 12 string guitar records.

So OK now since my sister pulled my card... I'm vowing to dig for more soul in 2012. i will build the soundtrack to my younger years growing up in the crib in Chicago on the west side where my mom's collection was the illest on the block. I declare 2012 soul year.

I also buy similar records...soundtracks, oddities etc, but wouldn't mind having more soul...I usually avoid the ones that I find as they're mostly overpriced down here. :?

Good luck on your quest for sangin' in 2012. :D

i got my soul collection on lock, although its separated across 2 states :?

about 6 months ago i went to one of those vinyl conventions and got a bunch of og soul and funk records to educate myself a little more thoroughly about it

i got some good ones though, the OG sample of big L's flamboyant was a real gem for me personally. damn, i cant remember what it was though, i should go dig them up and give all my records a spin sometime soon.

I always thought soul was considered the "obvious" sampling source for Hip Hop. I even got the impression it was almost frowned upon when people are sampling soul nowadays. Like... cmon son, be crative, sampling soul is so 1990!! :?: :D

For me it's still the genre i turn to when looking for samples. My number one rule for sampling is "sample the music you like to listen to", and i looooove old soul music! :)

I probably have around 500 soul records, mostly from around 1960/70-1980. Must have gone through them all several times and i still keep finding good samples.

Nice. it's time to get my dig on. I think I will do a beat tape for free download called the "My Soul Life's Soundtrack" with my soul digs for this year.

I've been trolling Craigslist for lots or batches of wax. Anyone ever bought batches
Like this? Found one cat with 5 crates of soul and hip hop but cat wanted $300. I got a homeboy who came up on Craigslist with some ungodly number of records. Lots of crap but lots more gems con the soul side...

On a side note he even got T La Rock 12" it's yours. Told him thats def jams first ever release if I'm not mistaken... He has to hold on to it.
