laser beams

talkin to this hippie yesterday, tellin me about this turntable with no neddle that uses lasers to read the grooves. i thought the kid was outta his mind but did a google and what do you know.

they tried this back in the 80's it was called linear turntable they had a straight arm and moved across the record as it spun, it has a tone arm i think was laser i didnt pay to much attention to these because atthat time i was freak'd that they would replace the technics 1200. i dont now if they are such a big stink anymore.

well they were making it read like how a cd reads a disc. A cd just has a bunch of grooves to it also. The laser just reads the grooves and it makes a digital vibration that the laser sends to the cd player which goes out your speaker. Same way a sylus tracks a groove and turns the vibration into a signal that the cartridge amplifys and makes electric, so it can come out your speaker. I would think it would be harder to track though, but it would be pretty dope.

i bet they sound like krap

They look pretty cool. It would hurt for sampling though. I like to reqind the record with my hand when sampling my grooves.
