Back in the day I used to sample from mp3's...

Now since there's a record store right on campus, all I do is dig in dollar bins...

I've noticed that there's a huge difference in the sound quality when u sample from vinyl. What I compare it to is the way directors still shoot movies with film rather than digital because of that grainy grittiness that comes through...

Is this my imagination or is it true? Someone once told me that mastering for a vinyl pressing is a completely different process than for compact disc/digital

with that said, is that the reason vinyl sampling has so much more personality than that from an mp3 or cd?

well vinyl in itself has a different quality to it. compared to cd's, vinyl is lofi, dirty, hissy because of the way the vinyl is pressed. cd's are much cleaner, hifi, no hiss. granted with good plug-ins you can put the hiss and dirt back into any track, it just sounds better (especially for hip hop) coming straight off the vinyl.
