once u start going often you start gettin to know what you like... but when your some what new and not too educated about records kinda like me you pretty much go by ur gut feeling... but IMO i think not being able to listen tot he record is a good thing.. things i go by right now since im not that educated in records yet is the cover, year, and you really can't lose with foreign stuff..

i found all this old shizznit of my mums, and i mean i thought this stuff was utter trash- rod stewart, barbara streisand etc, but damn if i didn't get some good samples- and DIFFERENT SOUNDS to what all the other cats were doing.

I think start off with the machine gun approach- just spray bullets wildly till you hit something that you really feel. Then hone it until its more like a snipper riffle- you walk out of that shop with 2 records not 20, but 2 amazing records.

my 2 biggest peices of advice-

1) the 80's were pretty bad, but this fact has kept alot of really good music from being plundered like the 70's has.

2) just becuase there's some weird looking white dude with bad hair and flared cords on the cover (actually come to think of it that kinda sounds like me) doesn't mean it isnt hot. And your more likely to get something fresh becuase other people have been scared off it coz it looks like crappola.

Most shops I go to allow you to listen to the records, and I always spend more money at those places. I find, listen, like, and buy records I wouldn't have touched if i couldn't listen.

At the few shops that I go to that don't allow you to listen, I stick to artists and records that I know and like. Ocassionally, I buy something because of the musicians in the credits. There are certain drummers, bassists, guitarists, ect that I can count on.

If you're looking for samples, I wouldn't suggest staying away from anyone. I don't think I ever heard a record that didn't have at least some one-shots that could be used.

If you're buying for listening pleasure, only you can say.

Samplin' is one thing..........clearence is another!!!
