last night a pt-01 saved my life.

went diggin with it yesterday. bought some shyt i may not have and didn't buy some shyt i would have. I'm in love with this record player, it's gonna save me some wasted money and broaden my horizons at the same time. my favorite spot doesn't have a tt for you to preview your finds on, and they have a nice selection (for up here anyway) with decent prices. There has always been a few selections i've been curious about but didn't want to get burned so i passed em up. anyway, got some shyt i'm happy with, a lot of open bass samples and a couple drum breaks, check 'em:

Alphonso Johnson - Moonshadows
Art Webb - Mr. Flute
Bobby Humphrey - The Best of
Hank Crawford - Wildflower
Willie Hutch - Concert in Blues
Hubert Laws - The Laws of Jazz
Ronnie Laws - Friends and Strangers

tons of samples on the Alphonso Johnson and a couple already famous samples on the others. Whats interesting is the fact that the samples already used aren't necessarily the best on the album, nor the one i would have used, i.e. - On the hank crawford is the sample for "drive slow" (don't get me wrong it's an ill sample) and on the ronnie laws is the sample for "deep fried friends" (which is arguably the worst sample on the album and doom didn't really do shyt to it except loop it)

anyway thanks for letting me rant, some of you will tell me that these are common albums, i don't doubt it, but i'm gonna go make some hott shyt now. i'm out!

Willie Hutch always has great samples. I'm gonna buy some records on eBay.. I found a user on there with nice records for a good price. Anyone know of another place online with decent prices on records?

Places that dont specialize in vinyl.. u gotta put in the work at the thrift stores if you dont wanna pay the cost of collector prices..

you all must be nu to diggin , i dont use one , and my herizons have been enlarged for many yrs , ....now youR just goin to go for stuff you lookin for. how is that expanding your herizons ?


expanding your herizons is buying those records you past up... and learning from what you bought : not hearing it first . digin conSist of label knowledge, artist knowledge and musicians, thats how you expand, and wasting money is part of it . i'm buying like 50 records from thifts and i get at the most from them 2-3 bad records that i cant use and thats that i dont use a portable.

i just dont see it expanding your herizons.

With a portable tt, some people would listen to stuff they normally wouldn't buy 'cause they don't want to risk wasting the money.

Why buy records and learn about the music, musicians, label etc, if you don't feel it. ...To learn more about what you don't like?

Thats another way to look at it. But I agree with you e.d.e... With what you were saying, gaining that knowledge and what not. With that, you'd be able to more accurately judge a record without having to listen to it. And thats like the ultimate to me. ...Takes time, though.

E.d.e.- i hear what you are saying. But having a tight budget (family), i need to make the most out of my digs. I bought these records because i felt they each had a very usable sample(s) on them. I can't be spendin money on shyt i won't use and possibly not really even like just to learn about it. I've had those days but they are over for now. Yes, i will continue to buy as much blak gold as i can. When i'm not using the pt-01 it's set up in my living room as my tt's are down in the studio. I love that thing.

i feel you , i just learn't what i know from askin and reading liner notes and shlt like that, beleive i have three kids and i pay rent of 14 hundred amonth . im on a fixed income beleive me i know i cant waste money but , if you study the record and do your homework you wont have problems.

i guess it's just easier for you nubies to buy a portable and search the net it's all there for you ,
i use the net and it works for me ,

@ FLUENT yeah i feel that coment, i guess i was just given the bike(record bug) and took off from there anyway i could, they didnt have portables back then , they did but they were hard to get a hold of. and in those days you couldnt listen to the new records that everyone is searching for these days.

it's all good fellas just dont forget to listen and read the records you get theres so much info on them one day your portable will go doown then what? you have to do it by your judgement.

oh one other thing stop listening to your hiphop stations cause they wont give you info on songs listen to your oldies or classic stations they always droppin info on records.

not sayin i need the portable to survive in the diggin game, it just helps with $$$, and btw i read the notes. thats the problem with cd's, you can put it on and do whatever (include ignoring it) but with vinyl you gotta pay attention, gotta flip sides etc. most of the time thats what i'm reading while i'm listening to it.

on another note, i have all my vinyl and tt's down in my studio. it was drivin me nuts cause i couldn't listen to vinyl while i was kickin it with my fam upstairs. now i got the portable set up in the living room. so, while i'm kickin it with my daughter i'll grab some records and i'll be taking notes on what i'm listening to, samples etc. I'm so much more focused when i'm down in the studio now. i basically have ish all mapped out before i get down there, really organized. It's drastically cut my production time. not spending studio time looking for samples, but just putting my ish together.....it's dope.

yeah i'll give you that it's good for things like that , dont get me wrong . some times i wish i had one for when i goto the inlaws so i can go diggin and come back and listen to shlt ,but i have to wait cus i dont have one .

maybe one day i will buy one for my son just to play with , he's only five and he knows aready , from me teachin him .
he hear i feel good from james brown and he asked me is that james i told yes it is it's james brown cause thats what i each him , from the movies he watches i teach him that theres an original to it . keep your daughters info and keep them away from digital music it will just mess up there hearing.
