Not really..."White labels" where I come from are bootleg records like Killah Kuts and the like (because the label is ALWAYS white). You ask a DJ where I'm from "how many white labels you got" and they look at YOU like you ain't a real DJ.

Promos aren't always pressed up on white labels, and most times will be pressed just like the retail version with record label name, artist's name, and song versions.

That's what I'm not clear on. I realize the cut-outs are def. for overstock and such but thought I had heard it could be a promo as well.

no..... they have it writen on the recod label or stamped.they are white labels usually but they can be the same as the regular label with the promo use only stamped
promos from those years are first press's they are a bit louder then the regular record. the records that have PROMO COPY on them are worth more these days to people. some people say they are almost like a 45(7') sound :bigger thicker sound.
they were used for air play on radio or club dj's

read this it may have some more info

^^^you're right on the drill holes as being stuff that was over stocked and promos can come the same way too sometimes. most times I look for promos and the org. because sometimes promos have alt. takes of a song or my have an extended version of a song.

..1wn..

I'm from N.Y. "White labels" just might be y'all's slang for promos in Cali, but I got hundreds of promos with all color labels (white, blue, red, multi, etc). But yeah, in N.Y. you walk into a record shop and say "gimme all your latest white labels" and your walking out with a catalog of mish-mash Killah Kuts/Nappy Dugout/II Damn Funky bootleg records. Some "white labels" don't even have a label name. Just a list of the songs on the record and it's usually different artists/songs with nothing in common all on one record (ex: an R. Kelly slow jam, a club banger, a Buckshot freestyle, and a Jay-Z clean/dirty/instrumental).

I just feel i needed to add that PROMO is just the fact that the record label did not sell the copy. A promo is a copy not sold, for record sales and tax reasons. I dont know if there is any difference in sound quality. And just wanted to say that promos are not white labels. Like DBA "some white labels dont even have a label name" and that is a way around copyright , you can sue if you dont know who made the record..
