180g lps?

So I've seen many re-issues coming out lately in either a regular lp or 180g lp. What are your takes on that? I know 180g is made out of virgin vinyl and is heavier, but what about the sound quality? does one sounds really better than the other? is it worth the extra cash or is the difference so minute? anyone with 2 copies, one on regular lp and one on a 180g lp can shed some knowledge? In my experience reissues are offered either on 180g or ordinary vinyl -- not both.

Thanks for the replies. I'm aware of the fact that it may not warp as easily as an ordinary LP since it's heavier, but what I'm mostly interested is the sound quality between the two?

Well, if you ever look closely at your stylus as a record spins you can see with some vinyl the tonearm may move up and down slightly. A heavier record is going to be less prone to have that sort of thing happen; this is one of the reasons people use record clamps.

The more stationary the stylus is vertically the better sound -- less flutter.

These things cant make the records sound $!400 better. Im confused, who is the target market for this kind of product??

There are much more reasonable clamps. I only paid $50 for mine.

$140 right? This is just an OEM scale. It's not even specifically made for styli -- some people here might even have one to weigh their herb . . .

Actually I think it's the same guy I bought mine from too. It's dead accurate as well; matches up perfect with the counterweight's measurement. I switch between 4 different headshells / carts though, so I use the scale and weights to get a configuration that works well without recalibrating my tonearm each time.

Same deal with this cartridge alignment disc I have. Yes, it does what it is supposed to and well . . . but a piece of plastic cost me $50 Too bad they have a patent on the design . . .

I was thinking that those could def. be used for dual purposes...But a max of 5 g's? I keep my weight up.

180g has a deeper gruv better sound quality less movment on stylus, not alway the case tho, you get cheap companys trying to put out music on quality WAX.

for the money i'll take the 180g over a regular LP if it's recent music, sounds better IMHO

I agree, recent music sounds much better on the heavier platter. Unfortunately the older music that's been re-pressed DOES NOT sound good at all. I bought a re-issue of "De La Soul is Dead" to use instead of my orig copy. It actually sounds worse then my original. Same goes for 90% of the re-pressed 180g's I have.

There is a specific company that seems to suck donkey testicles worse than the rest... Not sure I should name them here! But they are pretty well known for re-pressed shiz.

Yeah, that De La release was ehh -- not garbage, but very unflattering.

Why even release that album on 180g if it's not going to be 2XLP? Stupid.

I got a rerelease of a Bo Diddley record a couple months ago that sounded like it was made from rotted tapes. Weird drop outs all over . . . what kills me is that I bought that record for one specific break and that break is unusable. In fact, I like the entire song but even that experience is ruined with the intro break trashed . . .

yea i got some schit that sounds like they used an mp3 cdr for the master recording, and then accidentally hit pause midtrack a few times in the process... or maybe the cdr master was scratched...
